Earth Day 2022

Each year on 22nd April, millions of people from around the world come together to celebrate our planet, and to help remind ourselves and others about everything we can do to help make a change, this could be anything from a small change to a complete life change.

Earth Day was started to help protect the planet from pollution, deforestation and climate change, and the first Earth Day was in 1970! Around the world people take part in events such as picking up litter or planting trees, helping to spread awareness and make a positive impact on the planet, together everyone aims to outweigh a small percentage of the effects we have had on the earth.

Join us in celebrating Earth Day this year, we know how hard it can be to know where to start, or what change to make, so we have put together a small list of our top Earth Day ideas, so you can help save the planet all year round!

 Recycle, recycle, recycle!

The average person throws away around 400kg of waste each year – That’s 7 times their body weight! With 26 million tonnes of waste disposed of each year in the UK, 55% is sent to landfill sites! So this Earth Day, our top thing to do is recycle, why put things into landfill when they can be reused again and again? Before you throw something away, think what parts of this can be recycled or repurposed!

Litter Pick

We find it so upsetting seeing so much rubbish when you are on walks or driving, when it is so easy to pop it in the right bin and recycle it. If you’re looking for a positive way to help the planet, and also to do good in your community then popping to your local park or beach to pick up litter is a great way to do this – Plus helps you feel good afterwards too!

Refill shops

Now, we know this is new approach, but we love how many reuse and refill shops are opening in the UK, and all the amazing things you can buy at these stores. Have you ever been doing your weekly shop, and noticed quite how much plastic, cardboard or any single-serve material is in your basket – We have, so we switched to refill stores.

So keep your empty bottles, whether that is for your shampoo, conditioner or laundry detergent to pasta, rice and flour, you can refill without the excess materials, and only buy what you need helping to cut down on food waste. Plus, with refill stores being more in demand than ever there are so many different options with what you can do in store, so you can find more organic and sustainable ingredients, refill your favourites all whilst supporting local stores and connecting with like-minded people in the community!

Turn off the tap and lights!

Think of your bills, not only are they causing us extra bills each month, but when you leave your tap on or leave electric on when you aren’t using it, you are wasting valuable resources.

All of those sockets left plugged in and on unused are costing you money, and whilst we may think electric is just there, it has to be produced by fossil fuels (coal, oil or gas) which have a big impact on climate change, so try conserving electric to save you pennies and the planet!

You may think water is everywhere, however less than 1% of the water on Earth can be used by humans – Either it is too salty or too hard to access. So when you’re brushing your teeth or washing up, turn off that tap!

One big change you can make, is so easy – Shout about it! Make Earth Day talked about, let’s make sure everyone has a conversation about what they can do – The more people make a change, the bigger difference it will have on our planet.
